The first settlers to St Augustine brought with them horses and other livestock, and since then ponies and horse have been bred and trained in the Old City. One of the most relaxing and serene ways to get out and enjoy the natural areas that abound in St Augustine is to try Horseback Riding. Home to numerous stables, horseback riding guides, equestrian centers and more than 120 acres of designated Horseback Riding trails, the Old City is a wonderful place to enjoy the outdoors via horseback. Avid horsemen sometimes bring their horses along for their Florida Beach Vacations and choose to stay in a charming Bed and Breakfast for their accommodations.
Horseback Riding is a wonderful tradition, and many of the great places to enjoy Horseback Riding are near the beach. St Johns County Beaches, a long stretch of 42 miles of beach coastline, allow horseback riding on any stretch of the coast in the off season and allow Horseback Riding north of Surfside Beach Ramp only during the summer. St Johns County Beaches stretches from just north of Ponte Vedra Beach all the way to just before the town of Marineland. There is no need to purchase a permit to enjoy Horseback Riding, however if you are using a local stable guide, you must pay their ride rates.
