The settlement of St Augustine was established more than 400 years ago and has endured through many wars and the occupation of various European empires during its Colonial period. Many of the early forts, buildings, and homes were destroyed by forces of nature as they were built from easily destructible materials. However one such home, the Gonzalez-Alvarez House, survived and today it is the site of the Manucy Museum (which houses many historical artifacts from the Old City's history), and the Museum of Florida's Military. Because the Gonzalez-Alvarez House is the only architectural relic from the early years of the 18th century, it is known as the Oldest House National Landmark.
The Gonzalez-Alvarez Home was constructed just after the terrible destruction that was carried out by the British forces in 1702. Erected from coquina stone, the two room, one story building had humble beginnings, and a number of changes were made to it after 1763. Today, the Oldest House is much like it probably was in 1763, and it features a lovely high walled ornamental garden that is a celebrated place to hold Weddings. When you tour the Oldest House Museum, you can tour the home, browse both museums, and enjoy the garden, all with the same ticket. Guided tours generally last about a half hour and the Oldest House is open each day from 9 am to 5 pm, except Christmas Day, Thanksgiving and Easter.
