St. Augustine FL is filled with some of the most beautiful and remarkable examples of Spanish Colonial and Revival style architecture, and one of the most prominent examples of these styles is found in one of the Old City's oldest structures, the Cathedral Basilica. Many tourists and visitors to St. Augustine like to visit the Cathedral Basilica to stand in awe of its beauty and learn more about the History, as the diocese and parish itself has played an important role in the Old City's past.
The Cathedral Basilica was founded over 400 years ago and is known today as America's First Parish, as it was one of the first founded in the New World. The current structures that sit at the Cathedral Basilica are not the original however. The first three structures were destroyed by fire, and parishioners who were planning to construct the new Cathedral Basilica decided to use coquina rock, a type of sedimentary rock that forms from decomposed seashells, because this material was known to be largely inflammable. Construction on the Cathedral Basilica lasted for five years and was finally completed in 1797. Immediately it became a focal point for the community, and for Catholics regionally and today it remains a historically sacred place. Named a National Historic Landmark, the Cathedral Basilica is often photographed and visitors love to stop by and see the large bell tower which houses a bell believed to be one of the bells from the first structure that was burned. Other prominent structures on the grounds include a beautiful 204 foot high crucifix called the "Beacon of Faith", the Prince of Peace Votive Church, and the Blessed Sacrament Chapel.
In addition to being a wonderful place to visit and tour when in St Augustine, the Cathedral Basilica is also a popular place for Catholics from across the country to marry due to its historical significance as the first parish to form in the country.
