St Augustine Old Jail
The St Augustine Old Jail was built
by hotel magnate Henry Flagler in 1891,
and its pink stucco exterior makes it
look a lot like the luxurious hotels
that Flagler built and owned. Flagler
knew the residents of St Augustine
needed a jail to maintain order, and he
built a structure that would be just as
pleasing to the eye as the rest of the
charming resort homes and structures
that surrounded it. The St Augustine Old
Jail served the city of St Augustine for
over 60 years until 1953 when it became
one of the famous
St Augustine Florida
Attractions. Today, it is a rare example
of a 19th century jail, one of
only a few left standing in the country.

prisoner stories and visitors can view
the sheriff’s quarters where the sheriff
and his family lived, the male and

large collection of antique weapons and
artillery. Also, the jail’s gallows have
been restored and there is a nice
“birdcage” cell that many tourists like
to snap pictures inside. Many of the
