Tour the former Hotel Ponce de Leon, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Built by millionaire developer Henry Flagler in 1887, the Ponce s was one of the most exclusive resorts of its day. It is considered to be one of the finest examples of Spanish Renaissance architecture in the United States. The hotel is now home to Flagler College. Public tours include the opulent Grand Parlor, the Dining Hall and the towering dome of the Rotunda, each richly decorated with beautiful allegorical images. Tour times are 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and last approximately one hour. Tours depart from the main lobby (Rotunda) of the college located at 74 King Street

Admission: 7 for adults and $1 for children under the age of 12.

In 2002, St. Johns County made the decision to invest in refurbishing the St. Augustine Amphitheatre. After 5 years of construction and a sizeable investment, the Amphitheatre is a state of the art performing arts venue with the capacity to hold up to 4100 concert goers. A brand new conference room, 4 concession stands, a merchandise area, a large plaza, and an elaborate arboretum of walking trails make up the new facility.

St. Augustine birthday celebrations will be held throughout the weekend, with live music at 7 p.m. Sept. 2 in the Plaza de la Constitucion, between King Street and Cathedral Place. A performance by Skin ’n Bones & The Big Hungry Boys will take place just after city officials and the St. Augustine Royal Family hold a cake cutting ceremony in the gazebo of the plaza. Cake will then be served to the public next door in the Government House, 48 King St.

As part of St. Augustine’s celebration of the 445th birthday, the Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park, 11 Magnolia Ave., will host living history events from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors can learn about the Timucua, Native Americans that lived in the area when the Spaniards arrived in St. Augustine. Seminoles and other U.S. Indian tribes will be represented with encampments at the park. Admission is free to St. Johns County residents.

Join one of St. Augustine’s most popular cultural events on the first Friday of every month. Enjoy the latest exhibits, music, entertainment and refreshments at over 20 participating galleries and a special 6 p.m. concert performance at the St. Augustine Cathedral Basillica. Tours begin at Rembrandtz American Craft Gallery, 131 King Street. Galleries are open from 5 to 9 p.m. St. Augustine Sightseeing Trains and Old Town Trolleys offer attendees a complimentary shuttle service to most of the galleries. Shuttles run on a continuous loop every 30 minutes.

The history and the mystery of Ripley’s Castle Warden will be highlighted with a pair of book signings. Karen Harvey, author of Oldest Ghosts – St. Augustine Haunts, will be signing copies of her latest book, St. Augustine Enters the Twenty-First Century starting at 4 p.m. on Friday. On Saturday, starting at 2 p.m., David Lapham, author of Ghosts of St. Augustine and Ancient City Haunts will be signing copies of his newest book, Ghosthunting Florida.
