ABC News Recommends St. Augustine as an “International” Destination for Americans

Add ABC News' "Good Morning America" to the chorus of experts lauding the charm of St. Augustine this summer.

A July 15 segment of network's morning news program placed St. Augustine first on its selection of vacation locales Americans could visit “to feel as though they had jetted across the Atlantic without breaking the bank.”

Titled “Exotic Vacations on the Cheap: No Passport Required,” the nationally-broadcast segment was prepared in cooperation with Travel + Leisure magazine. It was designed to show Americans that, even in tough economic times, they can experience European atmosphere without leaving the borders of the USA or spending a fortune.

“For a Spanish vacation without buying a plane ticket to Madrid, try St. Augustine, Florida,” ABC News urged. “It’s the nation’s oldest city and is filled with Spanish-colonial architecture. It feels like Old World Spain complete with cobblestone streets, courtyards and an old colonial quarter.”

Among the city's past visitors have been the King and Queen of Spain themselves, the news segment also noted.

Some 5 million Americans watch Good Morning America daily.

The ABC accolade follows similar praise from USA Today, which named St. Augustine one of 10 great getaways where vacationers can park the car and walk, and enjoy a respite from high gasoline prices.
